As some of you already know, Asus Zenfone 2 Laser is available in 3 different versions – 5-inch, 5.5-inch and 6-inch. This review is about the 6-inch version which is now available in Malaysia for RM 1099. If you are interested in Asus Zenfone 2 Laser ZE550KL (5.5-inch), we’ve already done a review of that device sometime back. You can check out the review HERE.
ZE601KL is catered for someone who prefers a phablet (big sized smartphone). About 5-6 years ago, a phablet might be just too big to carry around but nowadays, people are starting to like big devices like this. It is good for entertainment due to the big screen and of course, ZE601KL also comes with dual speakers which adds more excitement to your entertainment.
As usual, you will get a charger, USB cable, warranty card and manual. There is no earphone inside the box. Fortunately Asus has given a 2A charger which can quickly charge your device.
The device looks very classy and nice. The back case is made of plastic but it looks like brushed aluminium. This award winning design is not something new. It was used even in the first Zenfone 2 series. The back cover also feels solid. There is no squeaking sound or whatsoever despite being a plastic. The only issue with the back cover is, it is quite difficult to remove it and you will definitely struggle to detach it.
On the top of the device, there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, microphone and power button. There is nothing on the sides. At the bottom, you will find the micro USB port and another microphone. The front camera is 5 Megapixel and main (rear) camera is 13 Megapixel. There is a dual LED flash and laser beam at the back, just next to the camera. Right below the camera, you will also find the volume rocker keys.
The speakers are also at the back, which is right at the bottom. Asus has given stereo speakers for this device which is at the bottom left and right of the device.. Once you open the back case, you will see the removable 3000 mAh battery. There are 2 SIM card slots and 1 micro SD card slot. The micro SD card slot is right on top of the SIM 1 slot.
Some of you might be worried about the size due to the 6-inch display. Yes, it is definitely big but it is also very slim and can easily fit into any standard sized pockets (let’s put skinny jeans out of this).
There is nothing much to say about the basics such as call quality, SMS, MMS etc. Everything is fine. The device is using Zen UI which is a matter of like or hate. We are used to it by now and we enjoy using it. Zen UI is something that you need to customize according to how you want. At first, we didn’t like because it was not as how we wanted when we took it out of the box but after knowing that the interface etc are highly customizable, we are now liking it so much.
The device supports 2 SIM cards and both are LTE capable. There is a notification light which is big enough. We are pretty sure you will not miss the blinking light unless you place your device very far from your sight.
We see this as an entertainment device due to the size of the display and the dual speakers. The speakers are very loud and clear. There is no issue when it comes to the speakers. The maximum volume was more than what we needed when watching movies. Our only gripe about the speakers are the positions where both speakers are next to each other. It will be nicer if Asus has placed the speakers separately at each corners because the ‘stereo effect’ was not really felt because the speakers are side by side.
Display is very good. It is full HD (1080p) display and it is bright, sharp and vivid. Since it is Android, you will not have issues playing any kind of video. The default app will not be able to do so but with 3rd party app, you can watch videos in just any format.
Photos and videos are good in a properly lit condition. However in low light condition or indoor, the photos and videos are not up to our expectation. They are not bad but we felt they could have been better. Well, generally in Asus smartphones, the camera depends very much on the software. So we hope that the quality will be better when Asus releases an update for this device.
The battery is good. Our device manage to last for about 26 hours and 30 minutes with 4.5 hours of screen-on-time. We don’t play games but we believe our usage is more than average. We also have 5 emails set up on this device with immediate notification (or at least every 15 minutes intervals). Other than that we are connected to all kind of social networks. We took several photos and also about 2 short videos to test the camera quality during this time.
As for charging, it took us about 2 hours and 20 minutes to charge the device from 0% to 100%. We were expecting the charging time to be within 2 hours because for the previous Asus Zenfone 2 (ZE551ML), we manage to charge it in less than 2 hours.
As we’ve said, the Asus Zenfone 2 Laser (ZE601KL) is an entertainment beast. For someone who enjoy watching a lot of videos, this is definitely a device for you. Even if you are solely using your device for work purpose, the big screen will definitely make a difference when reading emails or while looking at reports and charts. The price of this device is RM 1099 which is a reasonable price.
We have nothing much to complain about this device. The speakers were still very good despite being placed next to each other at the bottom. Only if they are placed at 2 different corners (top and bottom), the stereo effect would have been more obvious.
The charging time could have been better as well because with a 2A charger, we thought it will not take anything more than 2 hours to fully charge the device.
